Description
The Lemosho Route is known for its unmatched scenery and high success rate. Starting on the remote western side of the mountain, it offers a peaceful beginning through rainforest, leading onto the stunning Shira Plateau and eventually joining the southern circuit toward the summit.
This route crosses five distinct climate zones and provides excellent acclimatisation — especially on the 8-day itinerary. It’s the ideal route for trekkers who value both beauty and comfort.
All treks are led by Dulla and his experienced team. As someone who began his career as a porter, Dulla ensures that all crew members are treated fairly, equipped properly, and supported with dignity every step of the way.
“If I could recommend just one route for new climbers, it’s Lemosho. It gives you the best chance to summit, and you’ll see so much of the mountain — forests, cliffs, plains, glaciers. I always tell clients: take the 8-day version, go slow, and enjoy it. Pole pole — that’s how you get to the top.”

Please note: 8-day itinerary shown by default. 6- and 7-day versions are noted where they differ.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. You’ll be transferred to your hotel in Arusha, where you’ll meet your lead guide for a full trek briefing and gear check.
Day 2: Londorossi Gate (2,100m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)
Drive approx. 4 hours to the park gate. After registration, begin trekking through dense rainforest rich in biodiversity — colobus monkeys, mossy trees, and vibrant birdlife. Camp at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp).
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp (3,610m)
Ascend steadily through the forest and into the heather and moorland zone. Pass across ridges and valleys before reaching the open expanse of the Shira Plateau. Incredible views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru.
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hrs
Day 4: Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Easy trek across the plateau, perfect for acclimatisation. Shira 2 Camp offers expansive views of the summit and a chance to explore volcanic formations. Optional hike to Shira Cathedral for those feeling strong.
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs
(Skipped on 6-day itinerary)
Day 5: Shira 2 – Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Lava Tower (4,630m)
This is a crucial acclimatisation day. Climb high to Lava Tower and then descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hrs
Day 6: Barranco – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Start the day scaling the iconic Barranco Wall. It's steep but safe and offers jaw-dropping views. After the wall, hike through a series of ridges and valleys until you reach Karanga Camp.
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs
(Skipped on 6-day itinerary; combined with Day 7)
Day 7: Karanga – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Short but important trek to Barafu — your base camp before the summit. The terrain is dry, rocky, and lunar. You’ll rest, hydrate, eat, and prepare for your summit push.
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs
Day 8: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
The toughest and most rewarding day. Begin your summit around midnight. Reach Stella Point by sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa. Celebrate, take photos, and descend to Barafu and on to Mweka Camp.
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–14 hrs
